Graves vandalized at China cemetery

CHINA (WGME) -- The town of China is dealing with a disturbing case of vandalism at one of its cemeteries.

Graffiti covers the backs of eight graves with profanity and messages like "no heaven" and "the devil is watching."

"It's really disrespectful, but unfortunate," said Town Manager Dan L'Heureux.

L'Heureux said it was discovered on Tuesday by a contractor who was mowing the lawn, but the graffiti may have been there much longer.

"We don't know exactly how long, but since this is maintained every few weeks, it's probably been a few weeks or within a few weeks," he said.

Now, it's just a matter of days until it comes down.

"There aren't many visitors but there are some people who live either in China or nearby towns who are related to individuals who are buried here," said L'Heureux.

And he's already heard from one of them.

"We comforted them and assured them we would handle it quickly," L'Heureux said.

China police are investigating the vandalism and anyone with any information is asked to contact the town office at 207-445-2014.
