Vandals graffiti the Kennebec River Rail Trail
AUGUSTA (WGME) -- Augusta police are investigating an act of vandalism on one of the city's most popular trails.
From the mile markers and trash cans, to the kiosk and port-o-potty, vandals left graffiti in 18 spots along the Kennebec River Rail Trail.
It happened overnight Tuesday and on Wednesday, crews from several different departments teamed up for hours to remove it.
Some of the graffiti was so damaging, it couldn't be taken down, and instead it had to be painted over.
Leif Dahlin, Director of Community Services, says: We spent money that we should not have had to spend on cleaning this mess up, when we could have been much better utilizing our time and tax-payer dollars to continue beautifying this city, instead we had to take a step back and clean up a mess and that's tragic for the taxpayers of this community.
The clean-up is totaled to be about $1,000.
Officials say when they're caught; the vandals will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
