Man refuses to pull over for police and crashes into tree

WOOLWICH (WGME) -- A routine traffic stop ends with a driver crashing into a tree.

That man is in critical condition at Maine Medical Center.

This smashed-up vehicle is the one police say Stephen Smith was driving when they tried to stop him for speeding on Route 1 in Woolwich.

Police say Smith refused to stop at first, and then pulled over for the officer but, when a second officer arrived, Smith took off again.

Police found Smith's truck a half-mile away.

They say he lost control, hit a tree and was thrown from the truck.

The crash shut down Route 127 for 4 hours.

They don't know why Smith didn't stop.
