Costly price tag to fix washed out road in Freeport

FREEPORT (WGME) -- We've seen a lot of severe weather come through Maine this summer.

Two weeks ago, torrential rains washed out a road in Freeport, and now the two homeowners at the end of the road are finding out how much it will cost to fix.

The private road is the only way to the two homes at the end of Turkey Lane. The homeowners just had an estimate for how much it's going to cost to fix the damage and the price tag is a big one.

They've gotten a few estimates ranging everywhere from $40,000 to $100,000.

The homeowners say they're now getting some amazing support from the community and local contractors.

About two weeks ago Turkey Lane was washed out completely. The National Weather Service said the area saw about 6 inches of rain of August 13th and four of those inches fell in just two hours.  That caused this whole road to give out, making it impassible.

In the meantime, the residents at the two homes have had to get creative, using ATV’s and dirt walkways to get in and out. They've done a little work on the road since, but now they're looking for a more permanent solution.

A local contractor, Andrew Kittridge, spoke to the owners about getting a bunch of local contractors together to donate time and resources to fix the road.

"He's pretty positive he can get a bunch of people together to help donate time and resources to help us build the road which is incredible," said homeowner Beth Toothaker.

"So for me it is just that someone can be that kind to want to help us is a miracle is a blessing, and yes, I will graciously accept that because this is something I cannot fix," added homeowner Arleen Siegert-Young.

The two homeowners will be meeting with Kittridge Thursday to talk about how they can go about fixing this road.
