Auburn police arrest two men in late night burglary attempt
AUBURN (WGME) -- Auburn police say they caught two men in the act of robbing a home, thanks to a police dog, and the 75-year-old woman who was hiding in her bedroom.
She's was too scared to show her face, or give her name, but the homeowner wanted to share her story.
It started Friday morning, when the 75-year-old woman who's lived in her house nearly 50 years, woke up, and noticed something wrong.
So she spent the day with her family fixing the locks throughout the house.
Her family left around 10 and around midnight police say two men, Nicholas Sands and David Giasson broke in through a basement window.
The chain on the cellar door she installed just hours before slowed them down a little but then she heard a bang, and she knew.
As she waited for help, the officer sent his K9 through the same window that the suspects broke into.
That dog chased them out of the home, and into police custody.
Then she heard a knock on her bedroom door and an officer, telling her it's safe.
Both men are charged with burglary and even though they're in custody, the homeowner is installing an even tougher security system.
The homeowner says: Im not gonna sleep well I can tell you that. It's going to be a while before I can be comfortable in my own home, and I think that's very sad.
Both Sands and Giasson are being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on $2,500 cash bail.
The homeowner was not injured.
