Biddeford Market Basket shelves empty as employees protest new management
BIDDEFORD (WGME)-The Market Basket in Biddeford is seeing empty shelves and shocked customers.
We came for the sale today, for the chicken and there's nothing in stock at all, says shopper Linda Horrigan.
The only Market Basket in Maine is bare.
We havent received a Market Basket truck since Thursday morning, says Assistant Store Director, Keith McGee.
Warehouse workers, truck drivers and even corporate officials are walking off the job.
Theyre protesting a decision by the companys board to fire President Arthur T. Demoulas, in a family dispute.
We miss him very much, says Market Basket buyer Joe Garon, He is the foundation of our company, hes the man whos maintained the culture his father has started for us.
That culture keeps customers coming back.
If it werent for Market Basket there's no way we could have eaten as well as we did, says shopper Lauren Wynne, We wouldnt have had fresh vegetables, we just couldnt afford it.
Employees are asking customers to sign a petition to help them get their shelves filled back up.
We truly hope they understand what's going on and what we're fighting for, McGee says.
With more protests planned, employees hope their message is loud and clear.
We're not working for anyone else other than Arty, Garon says.
Until that happens, shoppers will have to suffer.
It's really going to hurt the people, Wynne says, Especially Biddeford, Biddeford needs this Market Basket.
