Portland’s upcoming Fourth of July celebration

PORTLAND (WGME) -- This year's Fourth of July party on Portlands Eastern Prom could be even more packed than last year.

Last years Stars and Stripes Spectacular on the Eastern Prom had a big crowd as usual, but Independence Day is on a Friday this year and because of that, organizers are estimating a record 50,000 people will pack the prom.

Jon Jennings, Assistant City Manager says, "We have people that come out starting at 9, 10 o'clock in the morning to get their space and then they just make a day of it and they just have fun."

Live music starts at 5:30 p.m. in front of city hall and continues throughout the night.

The fireworks show kicks off at 9:20 p.m.,

Local businesses started paying for the event after the city pulled taxpayer funding 5 years ago.

CBS 13 was told the city spent about $45,000 but now is is privately funded event, organizers raise and spend more than $150,000.
