“Bee friendly” plants may not be “bee friendly” at all

NATIONWIDE (WGME) -- Many home garden plants called "bee-friendly" are actually harming and killing bees.

A new study, released today, looked at retailers in 18 cities across America and Canada, including Portland.

The organic consumers association announced the study found 51% of plants considered "bee-friendly" sold at top garden retailers including Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart, were pre-treated with pesticides.

They say companies need to stop using pesticides and work to protect the bees.

Chad Churchill, nursery manager of Highland Avenue Greenhouse, says: By avoiding the use of pesticides especially neonics, we can do our part to protect bees and other pollinators that are essential for two thirds of the crops humans eat every day.

Some landscaping companies, nurseries and retail stores now say they will require vendors to remove these pesticides from plants by the end of the year.
