Making a Difference: New England Cancer Specialists

SCARBOROUGH (WGME) -- One of Maines premier cancer centers is getting a new name.

Maine Cancer Specialists in Scarborough is now New England Cancer Specialists.

A tour around what is now known as New England Cancer Specialists reveals a full service cancer center for patients battling the biggest challenge of their lives.

Meeting the emotional needs of cancer patients is as important as anything here, but Dr. Tracey Weisberg says patients also get top notch technology and expertise, and it's been that way for more than thirty years.

New England Cancer Specialists is committed to "making a difference" in the lives of cancer patients.

Cancer patient Norman Leclerc says he's living proof, It's the best place on earth, saved my life, twice."

Leclerc was first diagnosed with a brain tumor sixteen years ago.

The odds were stacked against him and after eleven surgeries and several recurrences, he's about to finish up his last round of chemotherapy.

This is what one of his doctors said to him, "Youre probably one of twenty people in the world who have survived this long with this tumor."

It's the kind of outcome the team hopes for here, but even though it doesnt always turn out that way, everyone gets a fighting chance.

The name may have changed, but the goal hasn't: Beat cancer when you can and even if you don't, give it one heck of a fight.

The name change is meant to better reflect the center's reach outside of Maine through its services, staff and relationships with hospitals throughout New England.

Dr. Weisberg says "technology" and "innovation" are the driving forces behind the program.
