Forensic psychiatrist evaluates Leroy Smith III
PORTLAND (WGM)E -- A judge has ordered a mental health evaluation for a man accused of killing his own father, but before that happens, Leroy Smith III spoke to us in an exclusive jailhouse interview.
In a long and rambling interview with CBS 13's Jon Chrisos, Smith admitted to killing his father, detailed how he did it, and why.
Smith called himself God several times in the interview.
We took the video to Doctor Jeffrey Barkin, a forensic psychiatrist based in Portland, to get his take on Smith and the interview.
He emphasized he can't diagnose Smith or any condition from an interview, but he offered this insight.
"It's all very disjointed, showing us a disturbance of thought process from the clip that you showed me," said Barkin. "And there are a lot of things that can cause this, such things as schizophrenia and probably given the persistence and length of the symptoms that he's had it would be pretty compatible with it. On the other hand, certain mood disorders like manic depression or bipolar disorder can also have such psychotic features as he's evidenced."
