Concern remains in Lewiston after recent arsons

LEWISTON (WGME) -- Police continued interviewing dozens of witnesses Friday to try and figure out who started four arsons, and attempted another.

David Nielsen couldn't believe what was happening. Nielsen captured the terrifying moments on his cell phone as flames ripped through the apartment building next to his house

"I really hope police get this solved quick," said Nielsen.

Four arson fires in one night, and Nielsen says he's afraid his house is next. Sgt. Brian O'Malley says several investigators are reviewing hours of surveillance video captured on cameras that the city installed after last year's arsons.

Mayor Robert Macdonald says he wants these crimes solved just as much as anyone else and has even turned to the governor for help.

"I asked if they could send some more prisoners and help us clean the place up," said Macdonald.

The mayor says it's about restoring peace of mind in the city, and getting justice for the families who have lost everything.

Police are asking for the community's cooperation, and are reminding people they can make an anonymous tip if they know anything.
