UPDATE: Deputy identified in Saturday morning shooting of Windham man
WINDHAM (WGME) -- One man is reported dead after being shot by a Cumberland County Sheriffs Deputy early Saturday morning in Windham.
The shooting took place around 6:15 a.m. on Searsport Way off Quartz Circle, according to Windham Police Chief Rick Lewsen.
Sheriff Kevin Joyce said Steven McKinney, 66, was carrying a handgun when police arrived. McKinney would not put the gun down when asked by police, and a deputy fired two shots and killed McKinney, Joyce said.
On Sunday, Joyce identified the deputy involved as Nicholas Mangino, who was placed on administrative leave with pay during the investigation by the attorney general's office. This is standard procedure, Joyce said. Mangino has been with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department for nearly two years
The Quartz Circle area off Route 302 in Windham was blocked off during the investigation.
The Attorney General's Office is now investigating the incident.
