Police: Woman left three young children home alone
FARMINGTON, N.H. (WGME) -- A New Hampshire woman and single mother of three is facing charges tonight for allegedly leaving her young children home alone earlier this week. Katarina Short is charged with 3 counts endangering the welfare of a child, and she's also charged with lying to police. Police say she left the children alone at 6:30 Tuesday morning to run an errand. When she didn't come back, they say the oldest boy, just 5 yrs old, got his four year-old brother and little sister, who is almost two, dressed for the cold. He then lead them nearly two blocks in frigid temperatures to the Farmington Police Department. Lt. John Drury said they came there looking for a ride to school, and didn't want to be late.
"We are very proud of him and kind of joked that he's five probably going on fifteen for being able to take care of his siblings the way that he did. Getting them dress getting their boots on and a jacket and trying to get to school," said Drury.
While they were there - police fed them a hot breakfast, kept them entertained and warm.
"The 1-year-old had some redness on her hands and probably an early onset of frostbite," said Police Chief Kevin Willey.
Police say Katarina Short lied to them about the errand she was supposed to be running, and has yet to divulge what it was she was doing when she allegedly left her kids. Short is out on bail. She has been ordered to have only supervised limited contact with her children and is due in court in Rochester on March 18th. Police say the kids have been relocated and are safe.
