Senior housing proposed for Portland

PORTLAND (AP) -- A proposal to build up to 40 units of affordable housing for elders in Portland is already running into neighborhood opposition.

Avesta Housing would like to build 25 to 40 units on a little more than a half-acre of land it has under contract to buy at the end of dead-end Powsland Street.

A company spokeswoman says the site is ideal because of its proximity to the Portland Transportation Center, Portland Trails system, medical offices and retail.

The company says there is a substantial need for affordable senior housing in Maine and in Portland.

But already there is opposition from some neighbors.

Dale Holman, who lives on nearby Willow Lane, tells our media partners at the Portland Press Herald he doesn't want affordable housing in a market-rate neighborhood. He also fears flooding issues.
