Changes coming to SAT exam

NATIONWIDE (WGME) -- The SAT was once the top college entrance exam, but now more students are taking alternate exams and some colleges don't even require SAT scores.

In an effort to change that, a new test will return to a 1600 point scale, the essay will be optional, and unreasonable vocabulary words will be replaced by words more commonly used in college, and real life.

It is time to admit that the SAT and the ACT have become far too disconnected from the work of our high schools, said College Board President David Coleman

Calculators will only be allowed on part of the math test, and students will no longer be penalized for wrong answers. Supporters are hopeful the changes will allow college-bound students to focus more on their work in and out of the classroom and less on exam preparation. The test will also be taken on computers, instead of with a number two pencil. Changes go into effect in 2016.
