Fire destroys historic Hollis home, hurts 2 firefighters

HOLLIS (WGME) -- A pellet stove is believed to be to blame for a fire that destroyed a home and hurt two firefighters Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived at the home on Cape Road around 4:15 p.m., saying a lack of manpower made fighting the flames difficult. The house is said to be 200 years old, was part of a horse farm and was part of the Underground Railroad.

"They found a passageway in the back where they could come from the upstairs - slaves could come from the upstairs - slide down and escape through a compartment in the back room," said Rita Anderson, a neighbor.

The Hollis fire chief says two firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated and released from the hospital.
