Children unknowingly taking marijuana

STATEWIDE (WGME) -- The rules around marijuana are relaxing. Edible forms of the drug are getting easier to find in Maine, and some worry that could put children in harm's way.

The Northern New England Poison Center says calls for kids getting into marijuana are up. In fact, they've already received five calls this year in the state of Maine. Kids are getting into pot and getting very sick.

The center says this is almost always an accident, and parents are not intentionally giving their kids marijuana laced treats. It is usually just kids seeing a brownie or cookie and not knowing any better.

The majority of the center's cases involve cookies or brownies, but they say pot candy is also on the market. The problem is the amount of pot in the treats has a greater effect on kids.

Most people dont take marijuana ingestions in their children very seriously because theyre imagining they just have the munchies and theyll be kind of out of it for a while, but its the dose thats important. The children get comparatively such a big dose that they become difficult to arouse, you have a child in a coma from eating a marijuana cookie or brownie, said Dr. Karen Simone of the Northern New England Poison Center.

Dr. Simone says most of the cases the Poison Control Center is seeing are minor, children's pupils getting large and drowsiness, but there are cases where children have trouble breathing.

The center says the warning parents should take, treat anything with marijuana in it like a prescription, and away and out of reach from any kids.
