Winter cleanup means damaged mailboxes

GORHAM (WGME) - Many communities are dealing with damaged mailboxes this winter. Route 202 in Gorham has plenty of large snow banks created by plow trucks. The plows that create those banks may also be damaging mailboxes. According to the Gorham Director of Public Works, those boxes are there at the homeowners own risk.

Officials say they are seeing this problem with mailboxes in a number of communities. They say either the snow plows actually hit the mailboxes or the damage is done by snow the plows push back. Gorham public works does their best to avoid them, but some do get hit. They say it is not their policy to replace those damaged mailboxes

The Maine Department of Transportation says it is not their policy to replace damages mailboxes either. Communities such as Westbrook, Windham and Falmouth are also getting complaints. According to their policies, they will replace those mailboxes.
