Civic Center, Pirates yet to reach deal
PORTLAND - The Cumberland County Civic Center has approved a new lease; now it is waiting on the Portland Pirates.
After much negotiating, the Civic Center Board of Trustees approved the terms to the new, five-year lease with the Pirates. The board says this is its final offer, and asked the Pirates to respond by the end of the day Wednesday.
That deadline came and went, and chairman Neal Pratt says Pirates CEO Brian Petrovek did not contact him. The Pirates refused to comment on the situation, adding that there would be nothing new to announce on Wednesday night.
The sticking points continue to be how the Pirates and the Civic Center will share their cut of fees and revenue. No deal could mean the Pirates will play their entire 2013-14 season in Lewiston, rather than just part of it because of the Civic Center renovations.
Pratt says they hope to reach a deal, but they are preparing to move forward without the Pirates.
