Maine Soldier Unhurt in Fort Hood Shooting

Army Specialist Anthony Gayne, of the 1st Division Infantry Unit, and an Augusta native, stationed at Fort Hood in Texas, wasn't hurt when a gunman on the base opened fire, killing at least 12 people and wounding 30 more Thursday afternoon. In an interview with News 13 at Eleven, Spc. Gayne says he was two blocks away when he heard shots Thursday afternoon. He then says he was told to go into the nearest building, find a room, close the door and lock it. Spc. Gayne remained in the room for at least five hours, not knowing what was going on outside, with the only information being received from friends and family via text message. On News 13 at Eleven Thursday, Spc. Gayne explained he thought the shots being fired were from a gun range, and didn't realize that people were being shot nearby. Spc. Gayne returned from a tour of duty in Iraq in June, and is planning to move to Fort Knox, Kentucky. Maine Soldier Unhurt in Fort Hood Shooting
