Portland Schools Facing Huge Cuts: Officials Seek Public's Help
Facing a possible ten million dollar cut in state aid over the next two years, the Portland Public School department is turning to the public for help.
Because of budget cuts, this year the school district says it needs to chop nearly three million dollars from its existing budget.
And looking forward, the superintendent says he expects to lose as much as seven million dollars in state aid in the coming year.
With that, the district is looking toward the community, posting a virtual suggestion box on its web site.
So far, the superintendent says they've received some helpful comments, including one about busing.
The school currently uses larger buses, at times, even if they're not full.
But with the public's suggestion and help from the transportation director, the superintendent says they will use vans instead of buses which will save 40-thousand dollars in transportation costs.
Even with that, Dr. Jim Morse says the cuts will hurt students.
Morse says he does not expect to lay any teachers off during this curtailment.
