| 22.01% | Yes | |
| 76.72% | No |
Comment: What becomes of the clunkers? The Dealerships that acquire them must destroy the engines and then they are off to the crusher. That sounds like more of a waste than anything! from Gray, Maine by Joe
Comment: another joke by the obama administration by ker
Comment: Given that the original one billion dollars resulted in the sale of 250,000 autos, another two billion could conceivable result in another half million cars sold. Of course, I think the program should be restricted to autos built in the United States. from Naples, ME by Walt
Comment: I do not think it should be extended. Me myself due to the economy my credit is bad so i am not even eligible for the cash for clunkers. Ia m a single mother but make just over enough not to get help when will the government Help Us to get back on our feet. from Westbrook by Vicky
Comment: Absolutely not. And anyone who can't wait for government run health care should keep a close eye on how poorly run this government program has been. from Whitefield by Marc
Comment: You have killed to many cars already! from Warren by Sara
Comment: Yes, it should be saved. There're too many gas guzzlers on the road. People in L.A. CA. need to walk more instead driving just to visit their neighbors next door or directly across the street from SACO, ME by Wilhelm Scream
Comment: If it worked that good in one week can you imagine what it could do in a month or two... by Karen
Comment: Those of us who are looking at a fixed income cannot afford to buy a new car and turn our 1997 auto in. The new car loan would out live me. from Scarborough, ME by Lynn
Comment: It isn't cost effective and will make it harder for people with a low credit score to qualify for a used vehicle. from auburn, me
Comment: When is the spending going to stop? The more the government spends, the higher the deficit grows, the higher our taxes will become to pay for the deficit. from Hope by Robert
Comment: Absolutely! This is exactly they type of innovative program I expect out of the Obama administration. My husband and I are both 40 years old and this is the first new vehicle we've ever owned. We ended up paying less for this brand new car than we did for our last used car we bought with 98,000 miles on it. They should expand the program to appliances to get old energy ineffecient appliances out of homes and stimulate the retail market further. I will be disappointed if the Republicans in the Senate are able to convince their peers that this type of program is not the way to go. I think the good ol' boys have made enough money in oil profits, don't you? from Farmingdale, ME by Renee
Comment: I think it is a good program to boost sales and force people, while providing great positive reinforcement, to choose a more energy efficient vehicle. from Fairfield, Maine by Vicki
Comment: i think that is money that could better spent on EDUCATION .i also think that the money that the state pours into I 95 should go towards EDUCATION .Besides our kids will be to damn dumb to get a drivers liscense or a job to to drive on the over inflated price hiway from fayette ,maine by Ralph
Comment: I don't think this is necessary. Spend, Spend, Spend is all they want to do. Health care should be of the most importance. from Windham, Maine by Margaret
Comment: Well yes and no, maybe the car companies should give half of the $4,500 as a discount from them, and the other half come from the government. from Jefferson, ME by Kim
Comment: Who is going to pay this money back? US the taxpayers! and as a taxpayer even with the $4500 I still can't afford a new car, doesn't anyone get it? The average working person in this economy still can't afford the payments we are living paycheck to paycheck!! So why should I foot the bill for someone else? I'm working for MY money!!!! from brunswick, maine by Joyce
Comment: No way. It makes people buy cars they don't want with money they don't have - then the tax payer foots the bill. from kittery/ME by J
Comment: We can't f9ind enough money for Health care reform, but we seem to be able to find money for other things. from Sabattus by George
Comment: Finally something we can see working. A program of some use, they could had tweaked a little better. But its working. from Cape Elizabeth, Maine by Lee
Comment: This spending is not helping anyone. Maybe some people will get a car but the more we focus on other things the higher and higher the unemployment goes. We need long term solutions not quick ones to benifit special intrests. from Lewiston,Maine by Chase
Comment: This is just another gimmick from the spenders in Washington. What they are doing is like paying for a bounced check with another check. More people should be mad as hell at this spending money WE DON"T HAVE! from sanford by jay
Comment: Actually in principal, I am against this unless similar incentives are available to everyone for everything. It appears that incentives like tax breaks has a positive effect on the economy. Who would have figured? from auburn by KIp
Comment: Why should the taxpayers buy other people's vehicles? from Avon by David
Comment: Where's the power granted to congress in the Constitution of the United States for ANY of the things they've been doing in D.C.? I can't find where The People granted congress the power to bailout ANYBODY, or dictate how PRIVATE companies are run, i.e. G.M., Ford, Banks, or even bailout the States, ALL with BORROWED MONEY? from Damariscotta, Me by Brian
Comment: Most people who own a "clunker" can't afford a new vehicle (which purchase would also likely require a higher insurance cost, sales tax, excise tax, etc. It encourages people who may not be financially all that stable to take out a new loan (where have we heard that before?) Why coiuldn't people be allowed to turn in their clunker for a motorcycle (likely much more fuel efficient), oh yeah, I forgot this was really about the auto industry and the unions. Who is paying for the cost of disposing of the vehicles? Many people would like to own a clunker (because that's what they can afford) but now there will be fewer of them. Peolple who own older cars will now have a harder time finding parts for them and they may be more expensive. If the government (taxpayers) offer a "cash for anything" program people will take advantage of it. The program is already in trouble. Now they want to run health care! Fasten your seat belts!!! from Hebron/ME by Gino
Comment: The Hummer dealership said last week they sold 4 cars the first day. If you can afford a Hummer, you don't need "cash for clunkers". The program is all wrong and the wrong people are getting the tax break. from Dayton Maine by Pat
Comment: I would rather give the money so that the pubic can benefit than to just keep giving the car manufacturers baleout cash. The only change I would suggest is that you have to buy an american car! from Old Orchard Beach by Denise
Comment: The plan is financed by Communist China and our Great Grandchildren will be paying for our cars. Most (GM) Government Motors vehicles are made overseas. I wish WGME would do their homework. from Harrison by Paul
Comment: So whose pockets will this next 2 billion come out of? Spend, spend, spend!! from Mechanic Falls, ME by Sybil
Comment: This program is only good for people who don't need it . If you drive an older car or truck it doesnot qualfi because it is too old from Lewiston, maine by Brian
Comment: I think they should worry more about the health insurance. My son and I don't have any, along with millions of other people. I can't afford to pay for it through work. We need more options! from Westbrook, ME by Zanetta
Comment: Why should we subsidise the car companies that are owned by the government and add to the debt that our Grandchildren have to pay from Owls Head Maine by Frieda M
Comment: Its a good idea but many older cars can get alot better mpg than newer cars with the right tuning and tires. it seems as though this is part of the stimulus package at least for the big car company execs. id like to think im wrong but really we have to ask ourselves how long would you have to drive your clunker getting 20 mpg to offset the cost and impact of building a brand new car getting 28 mpg? from Oxford, Me by Roger
Comment: I think that it is a waste of money to put in for a trade-in,when it could go some place else like into the economy! I do think that it would be better served if it was put into medicare,so that people could get their meds or pay the hospital bills they would have. Two billion dollars is a lot of money that could serve a lot of people that do really need it!Putting it into this program Cash for Clunkers is a useless waste of time. Wonder if we could get money back on Obamam as a trade-in,when we do dump him! from Waterville,Maine by Gary
Comment: the rules are not fair for this. Im a single mom that works very hard sometimes I work over 100 hours a week I have a 1999 Chevy Malibu that I still have a year left to pay on I only get 19 mpg I think the 4500.oo or what ever I would get should be able to pay off the loan so I could trade it in. People that cant even afford cars can trade in their and the bank will be taking them back before long but someone that works hard cant get any help. from South Portland by Karen
Comment: I think that this bill should have focused the CASH FOR CLUNKERS money to the manufactures that needed the financial assistance from the goverment. It only makes good comon sence that since tax money was used to keep american car companies in business the stimulus money should be applied to them. The foreign manufacturers do not need the assistance. from scarbough,me by mark
Comment: Government spending needs to stop. We are never going to be able to pay for all of this. from New Vineyard, Maine by Matthew
Comment: Absolutely the program should be continued. Cash for battleships always stimulates the economy, this program is doing the same thing from Old Orchard Beach, Me. by Ralph
Comment: It is the one program that does not target the rich and wealthy and provides work for many from augusta, maine by michael
Comment: So far President Obama has created an under financed program, lied about raising our taxes "a single dime." He is in fact raising them many many many billions of dimes. from Portland, ME by Cole
Comment: Of all the really dumb ideas to come out of Washington these days, this program ranks very near the top!!! from Lyman, ME by Anita
Comment: It should be increased until everyone who wants to participate within the time frame advertiesed by the government (July 1 - Oct 31)is able to do so. from Lewiston by O.
Comment: At first I was against the program but now that I have seen it in action I think it is a great way to stimulate the economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help people purchase vehicles that they may not have been able to afford otherwise. from Poland by Mandi
Comment: No by Ann
Comment: ain't we hurting enough with no jobs, people on unemployment, gas to high and people having a hard time making ends meet and all that cash going into clunkers, should go into a fund to get the united states back on track and use the $ 2 billion on getting us out of debt. even if people get money towards a new car, they have to pay the rest out of thier pockets to have the final sale on that car/truck. come on washingto, wake up. were hurting enough. from biddeford, maine. by james
Comment: we are going to have to many people stuck with payments they can not afford from Jay Me by Mike
Comment: This is huge waste of taxpayer dollars. Stimulating the economy by kicking the debt to future generations. Accept that some businesses are meant to fail. from Brunswick, ME by Karl
Comment: No. We are a small family that is trying hard to get out of debt on a one-person income. We rely on buying usable "clunkers" so that we don't have to go into debt to have a car. It has worked well for us for several years now. We are concerned that we will have no access to buying a good clunker now, as the gvmt. will destroy all cars traded in under this program. What a WASTE! from Livermore by Joanna
Comment: Obamao has given no numbers, proof, or transparency that this is doing any good. Why should the the collective taxpayer not only give a huge break to car purchasers but also continue to pay interest because we are out of money. We got in this mess because of spending money we do not have and we seem to think that spending more that we do not have will solve the problems! from Maine by Cheryl
Comment: A lot of people complain about the government not giving back their tax dollars, but the cash for clunkers is doing exactly that. In fact, it's so popular that Congress acted with the speed of light to extend the program. from Gorham, ME by Wayne
Comment: Let's first get a clear understanding how the first billion was distributed and if there was any long term benefit to the program. Throwing money hand over fist from one clever program to another will only create more problems, not solve them. from Westbrook / ME by Daniel
Comment: NO way.. This only benefits a small portion of taxpayers.. not all of us.. and maybe even some who do not pay taxes at all. Enough of the hand outs, bailouts and giveaways.. from Westbrook by Missy
Comment: I think the have given enough to the auto dealers. put that 2 billion to health coverage maybe it would help people that are paying out the roof for it from poland, maine by tammy
Comment: No because once again people that are not as responsible as some of us get bailed out again, meaning more incentives and great deals for them while those of us that take care of things ahead of time and make sacrarices and can't take advantage of these deals. from Saco, ME by Josh
Comment: I feel the money can be spent on other things. Like a stimulas we can all get something from. You are encouraging people to buy new cars but are they going to be able to afford to make the payments in the long run??? Besides I pay enough taxes!! from Bath by Sherry
Comment: Absolutely not. For Heaven's sake, isn't the federal debt high enough! Our grandchildren are already going to suffer for our money mismanagement, do we need to continue to extend it to our great-grandchildren as well. from Hebron by Cindy
Comment: Mileage per gallon on the car bought with the clunker trade should be getting at least 32 mpg overall
Comment: When will the waste end? Do we not understand where this "government" money has to come from? from Dresden by James
Comment: When the program is done people will stop buying cars again. It's just just like when the gov't gave billions to GM and Chrysler to keep them from bankruptcy. All it did was waste our tax dollars because 6 mos later they both went bankrupt anyway. This along with all the stimulus money just delays a true sustained economic recovery. The Democrats and those that voted for Obama have no one to blame but themselves now. from Freeport by John
