40.07% Yes
59.18% No

Comment: While it may not have been the smartest thing to say, he was just trying to be funny, and I don't believe he realized what he was saying until it was too late. from Portland by Brian

Comment: He was joking! People need to focus on what's real from Harrison, Maine by Rev Nan

Comment: No. It was a poor choice of words but not that big of a deal. from Livermore Maine by Eric

Comment: Sometimes people say things that don't come out right. I'd rather hear him talking candid and make a mistake then scripted all the time like Bush always did. from Milton Township, ME by Mandy

Comment: It's just another idiot comment from a Political MORON. I'm sure glad I didn't vote for him. from West Gardiner, Maine by Jonathan

Comment: Yes, the comment was inappropriate; however, our economy is in shambles, shouldn't the critics be more concerned with fixing the economic crisis than critiquing his comments on a late night talk show. It would have been a non-issue of Leno or Letterman had made the comment. from Standish by Doug

Comment: The President has a good sense of humor. I don't believe he meant to offend anybody. from Sanford Maine 04073 by Lacota

Comment: It is just another case to prove this man is not capable of thinking on his feet- oh so there is a reason for the telaprompter. from Saco by John

Comment: Goes to show what a dope he is. Did he misread his teleprompter AGAIN? Can you imagine the uproar there would be if the comment came from a republican? He would have been thrown out of office within minutes. I just love double standards. from Portland by Alan

Comment: It just goes to show that the President can't speak without a teleprompter. He is nothing but good at reading out loud. What he said is very offensive to everyone and the families of special needs. It is all so not the first offensive things that he has done. I am very deeply offended by the president wanting to make Veterens pay for there own VA benifits and for raising taxs when he said he wouldn't.. take the new tabacco taxes for example. from Westbrook by Matt

Comment: it was said in good nature and I have two profoundly handycaped relitives from Lewiston, Maine by brian

Comment: President Obama was just poking fun of himself from Rumford by Brande

Comment: Why would I? This is a good sign, we know our president is not a fake person, He has a good sense of humor. He shouldn't have to censor himself. from Gorham by Tom

Comment: He always makes an arrogant goof when he doesn't have his teleprompters in front of him. from south berwick by kathleen

Comment: I tend to think before I speak. BUT I cannot imagine being in the spot light 24/7 and having to watch my language to make sure it is "PC" at all times. Can you imagine how difficult that would be? from Portland, ME by Allie

Comment: This comment is completely unacceptable coming from the President of the United States. He has a lot more important things to be doing then spending time on The Tonight Show. by Kyle

Comment: No. I think he was making light of himself, and the comment was similar to a basketball example comparing someone's scoring to a team of short people. It was obviously an over-generalization however. from Standish, ME by Tim

Comment: As someone of French-Canadian descent who has heard "Frenchman" jokes all my life, and I don't find them offensive. If we can't laugh at ourselves, then it's a very sad state we are in. This "Political Correctedness" thing has really gotten out of hand from Wells, ME by Kathie

Comment: this is blown up way to much more pain is caused be repeating it over and over, from Sebago by Priscilla

Comment: He is showing the person he really is. I guess he didnt have his teleprompter set up. My luke warm support of Obama is going quickly. Overspending and stupid. Not a good combination for a president. This sounds like Bush 2. from Portland by Bill

Comment: President Obama is a moron, and he is pathetic leader for our nation. I wish Obama's obvious disabilities were recognized before the election. from Saco, ME by David

Comment: Absolutely. I expect understanding and compassion from our President. In such a PC society I'm surprised that would even be in his mind to even think such a thing. Shame on him. from Topsham, ME by Kim

Comment: Without his teleprompter, President Obama's real personality traits are revealed in his careless comments. from Westbrook, Maine by Katherine

Comment: aren't we all becoming far too sensitive? watching the clip, it was obviously not meant as a disparaging statement toward anyone (including special olympians) by Ed

Comment: pleeease...he was just being human..and I am sure he did not mean anything bad by it...we ALL have slipped with words at one time or another...he is not perfect...get over it from Wiscasset by Roger

Comment: it is rediculous for people to have to think a dozen times before speaking in case of possibly hurting someone's feelings. the only thought i had, was the president was making fun of himself and his lousy bowling score, no one else.. from standish me by sally

Comment: I have a sister who is a special olympian and I did not take offense to the President's comments. Of course people with special needs are capable of great things and are valuable members of our community. Do you honestly think the President meant to be insensitive? Of course not!!! I think that our society is sometimes too sensitive and needs to "let it go". from Lewiston by Carla

Comment: wasen't meant to be offensive, we all say things in a joke we maybe shouldn't at times, He should apologize, but was just a slip of the tongue... from cornish, maine by Christine

Comment: For some reason unless scripted our President has a speaking problem. He better give them some Stimulus Money. Our Special Olympic Kids are great. from Phippsburg by Jean

Comment: You would think that the President of the USA would be able to control his mouth. This comment showed this man's lack of expierence and his arrogance. This gaffe fits right in with the beautiful thoughtful gift he gave to Prime Minister Brown. It's time to grow up Mr. Obama you are the President of the USA. from Gorham,Me by Peter

Comment: Once again, words are disected to cause trouble. People need to stop being so sensitive to such little things. Just knowing the person he is, I know it wasn't intentional. from Saco by John

Comment: I don't think he would intentionly say anything to hurt the special olympics. from wells, maine by Judy

Comment: Unfortunately, his 15 second comment on the Tonight show greatly diminished 20 years of hard work by so many caring people. Why didn't he think before making his comment? from Auburn, Maine by Roland

Comment: Not at all. Any rational person watching the show should have been able to tell that the President meant only to make a disparaging joke about himself. People today are far too thin-skinned and seem to go out of their way to look for an opportunity to take offense. I will agree that it was a joke made without thought, but to make a nationwide fuss over it is nothing short of ridiculous. Special Olympics is a wonderful organization and event, but this was an Obama joke, not a Special Olympics joke. from Portland, ME by Gordon

Comment: I am disappointed by people. So many are just looking for and excuse to be outraged by an offhand remark. If you posses any brains at all you know nothing was meant by the President's comment as with most other high profile individuals. I have better things to do than analyze comments by public figures to see if they have said anything that could possibly offend me or any cause or group I support. from Norway Maine by Doug

Comment: Why does the media seem to need to make a mountain out of a mole hill. President Obama did not mean anything negative toward the Special Olympics, he was just saying his bowling is not as good as those in the Special Olympics. I would consider that a compliment to Special Olympics Bowlers! Perhaps if we look more to the positive side of things and not the negative, this country would be in better shape! from Albany Township by Mark and Vera

Comment: people need to stop being so sensitive about everything and demanding a apology for everything that's said! Grow up from lewiston by Tim

Comment: I don't think our president belongs on a comedy show. He should get a new joke writer. A very poor choice of words. from Westbrook by Dennis

Comment: people need to lighten up..it was a joke..god forbid he show any human side. from Readfield Maine by sarah plante

Comment: I think this whole situation is being blown out of proportion. I would not doubt the opposition party had a hand in this nonsense. I truly believe President Obama did not intend to offend anyone. Let's be honest here, we have all made comments that slip out without thinking, not meaning to hurt anyone. After all we are all human. Give the man a break. This has truly become a political issue. from Limerick by Carol

Comment: Yes I do find it offensive it's just another reason why he's not capable of being in office and is another reason why he be should be kicked out of office!!! from China ME by Peter

Comment: The world has become so thinskinned that common conversation is in jeopardy! from Damariscotta by Vaughn

Comment: I am a mother of a World Special Olympics Athlete who represented the United States of America in the World Special Olympics in Shanghai,China in October of 2007. As most of you read this you will not know this, as there was little to no coverage in regards to these competitions that took place. ABC Family covered the openning events, but never the coverage of the competitions. Where were all of you Americans to support our athletes while in competition. No where to be found. Many other countries where there to support there athletes to cheer them on, to give coverage in their countries, to support the families of the athletes, but of us from America, well......... no. So as my daugher spent 14 months training, little to no one was there to support here So America, maybe when it comes to Special Olympics and the support you give them maybe you should be pointing the finger at yourselves. from Raymond, ME by Mary

Comment: Of course not... only a republican could find fault with this quip, and this after 8 years of dumbya. Come on now!! from Turner by John

Comment: I am very concern about the Presidents thought process. My oponion of anyone who uses those kinds of comments must mean they themsleves feel a certain way about Special Olympic's and have made this comment before. from Portland by Mike

Comment: President Obama is one of the most caring and genuine people around. Although he made a poor choice of words, he did not mean to hurt anyone. He is decent and cares about people. from ME by Valerie

Comment: Above all else we have to keep a sense of humor. from OOB, me by Lance

Comment: He was just kidding, and the media are really the ones causing all the fuss about it. Get a life... from Bath, Me. by Davd

Comment: It's extremely offensive. Him joke would have been more funny were he to have replaced "Special Olympics" with "Pelosi, Reid and Geithner". from South Portland / ME by Jim

Comment: The Tonight show...entertainment, not a political forum, unless you want to make it one, as some have done in the past. Our country has become so politically correct that everyone gets offended when someone makes a comment that most would find funny. GROW UP! I get offended every week but don't take it so seriously that I waste time worrying about it instead of what is really important. from Gray by Al

Comment: IF THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A CONSERVATIVE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NOT A GAFF. THEY WOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING LIKE THEY ARE DISCRIMATING AGAINTS THE SPECIAL OLYMPIC. HE SHOULD PERSONALLY APPOLIGIZE TO ALL OLYPIANS NOT JUST A PRESS RELEASE I'M OUTRAGE AT HIS GAFF from LEWISTON.ME by PHIL

Comment: This is just a case of something being said that is taken the opposite from the way it was meant to be taken. I am sure that had he really thought about it before he said it he would have changed it to "people on the special olympics bowl better than I do." which means he simply is sayng he is a poor bowler. from Steepfalls, Me by Susan

Comment: this, from a man who espouses equality? by Benoit

Comment: Would there even be a question if Bush had said that? Talk about a double standard. from Durham, ME by Floyd

Comment: As a parent of a Special Olympian, I find the comment by the President to be extremely offensive. I have seen many of the Olympians over the years at both the Winter games, and also the summer games. To me, the comments were very ignorant. He owes much more than an apology to the Athletes. The Special Olympic motto includes the line "Let me be brave in the attempt." Let Mr Obama be brave in his attempt to explain his comments without a special speech writer. from Topsham, ME by GARY

Comment: No,I do not find President Obama's comments offensive. This is no different than a not so good golfer saying that he/she has a handicap of seven, eight or whatever.... from Brunswick by Stanley

Comment: I do not think anything he does or says is not going to affend somebody.Do you think the are not making sick jokes about him. from Livermore by Bill

Comment: President Obama is a good family man and supports values.even the president is human and will learn and grow. from Maine by Steve

Comment: Everyone has a joke or a saying in some shape or form. Like Bob Marley says about being a special kids riding on the short bus (or something like that) Doesn't mean that we should take offense. Obama is human just like the rest of us and is entitled to have a personality! from Westbrook by C

Comment: I am a Special Olympic coach and was at an event today with more than a hundred Olympians! I find Obama's comment very offensive. I challenge him to attend "1 event" with Special Olympics and his life will be deeply moved and changed forever. from Lisbon,Maine by Lynda

Comment: I do not think that the President would intentionally insult the handicap, I think that this piece of news has been sensationalized and is not relative to the real issues that effect us here in Maine. Please discuss the problems that are hurting us Mainers, such as all of the paper-mills shutting down and how our taxes are going to increase because of this loss of industry. Thanks for the opportunity to speak my mind. from Gardiner by D

Comment: I am a coach of special olympics team and my brother is an athlete and i see how people put down people with disabilities and it's a shame we are all human. special olympics is a great thing with out it they would be lost from oob Me by travis

Comment: What's offensive is the double standard in play when democrats rule and the willing media glosses over it from Auburn, ME by gilbert

Comment: I can not believe what kind of people you elected. The economy is in shambles and President telepromter is on a comedy show making fun of special needs people! This is appalling! from West Gardiner by Brian

Comment: I have 2 relatives who are in special olymics, We are very proud of them. They have showed us that they can be champions Too. Maybe President Obama should work with them instead of comparing them to his bowling then he would see just how talented they can be. from Lewiston Maine by Michael

Comment: get real... you are blowing this out of proportion.. Obama clearly supports programs like Special Olympics... by DK

Comment: having grown up with a mentall disabled sibling i have seen the pain and hurt that can come from remarks that are dicriminatory and the ignorance of the people who make them of all people the president of the united should be much more aware of comments he makes being the great orator that he is i woulld have thought he would have know better. it may not have been intentional but thinl before you open your mouth publicity like this you don't need from thomaston maine by william

Comment: I dont think it was Offensive at all. they should consider bowling part of Special Olympics. from Maine by Sophie

Comment: This is a lot of balony. The critics should get a job. from Naples, Florida by John

Comment: its jay leno that is normal for that program to make cracks about everything and any one .... cry about something else geesh ... from sebago by jeremy

Comment: Kinda can go both ways on this... we have all and I mean ALL (self included) referred to the R-word or used the "special Olympics" terms before. I think, once again it shows us that our President is HUMAN... by ~x~

Comment: i dont think he is as smart as he wants us to think he is from jay maine by scoot

Comment: yes yes yes and he will say more dumb thing's because he's a idiot thanks liberals for choosing him you morons from PORTLAND by steve

Comment: Definitely! As a minority himself, he should know what is and what is not tolerated. He seems to be very smug and arrogant when he speaks. I'm sure that Americans will soon forget, just as they did after Mrs. Messiah’s comments about her country. If this had been anyone in the GOP, there would be great outrage. If this had been some kid on the playground saying that something is gay or retarded, they would be suspended! Why do we have such double standards? Where are Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the ACLU when one of its own show their true colors. Remember: OBAMA = One Big Ass Mistake America! from Brunswick by Disgusted

Comment: I DON'T BELIVE THAT THE PRESIDENT WANTED IT TO COME OUT THAT WAY. WE ALL SAY THINGS THE WRONG WAY AT TIMES. BUT WE ALL NEED TO BE MORE CAREFUL ON HOW WE TALK. SO WE DON'T HARM SOMEONE.I LOVE THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS. from SO.CHINA by JOE

Comment: I wish George Bush had said it, and seen the reaction from all the tree hugging liberals out there. But since it was one of there own, this isnt creating a lot of stir. Imagine if bush, mccain, or palin said that. give me a break. its offensive, but no one wants to admit it because its obama. if it was a rebublican the poll vote would probably be 100% offensive. Just depends on who says it. why does everyone think obama is so untouchable? from Portland by Frod

Comment: We are getting so "politically correct" that nothing and no one can be joked about. Gotten to the point of being just plain silly. by Ann

Comment: You expect a certain standard from the president, after all he is representing america. from lewiston by april

Comment: NO !!!! Who gives a care about something so small when the world is facing such huge problems !!!! from Harrison by Cliff

Comment: I think he slipped up trying to clarify (with wit) his bowling abilities he was man nuff to apologize from maine by joefisherman

Comment: It is good to know we have a person representing our country instead of someone who is just trying to network or make himself look good. Our President has a sense of humor. Perhaps he shouldn't have said what he did, but I know I chuckled - and I am a teacher. by A~

Comment: it might have been the wrong thing to say where and when he said it, but definitly you could tell it was a joke. just because the president said it, its a big deal from Auburn, ME by Cory

Comment: ahh ahh yes it was. if it was a republican you would be demanding his resignation. from windham by chuck

Comment: What I do find offensive is the President of the United States appearing on a late night talk show. Hasn't he better things to do from Westport Island, ME by Mikki

Comment: No, what I find offensive are the PC whiners who have made it their life's mission to find something to be offended about. The president spoke about many important things in the Leno appearance and I find it unbelivable that this is what's being talked about. And clearly he was making fun of himself and his own lack of skill. Walk it off, people! from Auburn by D

Comment: NO! To err is human and isn't it a fact that humans voted him into office ? Should they all be Held responsible for their mistakes ? from Sanford by Ruth

Comment: when did a joke stop being a joke? by D

Comment: Could you imagine what would be said about G.W. Bush if he had said the same thing. It just goes to show that people make mistakes. But it also confirms my initial impression of Obama. He is an idiot! from Lebanon by Bryan

Comment: He showed he has a personality, about damn time! by Bill

Comment: It was not his intention to hurt a disabled person. from Augusta, Maine by Dolores

Comment: Not at all. People just like to turn things around as usual. There are worse things in this world to worry about!!!! from Me by E

Comment: He meant it as a joke like any of us would. The anti Obama folks can have a field day with this. from Windham, ME by Ken

Comment: The comment should not have been made at all..He could have said he bowls as good as a chicken would..Why use any group of people to compare himself with...open mouth insert foot is what he did..by the way I DIDN'T vote for him... from Casco,Maine by Pearl

Comment: This Presidency is like "Amature Hour" by Joe

Comment: Nothing Obama says about bowling or the Special Olympics will have any effect on my opinions about either. This is a tempest in a teapot and anyone who cares about these things should spend their time pursuing them not watching stupid TV interviews. from 670 Bonney Road by Christine

Comment: I am a coach/handler for Special Olympics Maine Equestrian and I'm sure my riders bowl better than Mr. Obama, but if he is trying to say he can't bowl good, then he should just say he can't bowl good. He, as the voice of America, should not use certain groups as a descriptive...He really has been screwing up alot has't he? from Brunswick, ME by Treasa

Comment: Yes. I am very surprised he didn't know better than that. from Norway by Alan

Comment: While the special olympics may have been affended I know that what our President said was not ment to affend them or anyone else...just like anyone of us today, some times things may be said and nothing is ment by it...when will all of this stop...we have to be careful of every single word we say or we will offend someone some where. I am sure nothing was ment by what he said. from Sabattus, ME by Linda

Comment: Why is every comment taken so seriously? Lighten up people. from Auburn,Maine by Harold

Comment: This is another example of the careless way the this President treats the voters. He says one thing and does something completely different. He is hobnobbing with Hollywood when he should be focused on the economy and getting his treasury vacancies filled. This man is proving to be the worst example of chief executive modern times has ever seen. from Yarmouth by Richard

Comment: I think this is being blown way our of proportion. He has apologized, so let's just drop it and go on with important issues. from Union, ME by Carleton

Comment: Give it up, if you actually heard him make the comment it was totally directed toward himself. He didn't say it to mean any offensive to ANYONE. So if I said that I couldn't bowl for crap and compared myself to the special olympics would I be all over the news too?? I don't know how many times when playing games I have heard that comment, and no one I hang out with is being punished for making a joke about their "A" game when they don't do so well. GIVE IT UP!! Comment: I found his comment offensive. I work with children that have autism and they are beautiful children with their own strenghts and weaknesses. Comment: Let's look at it a different way..the president was "not" putting the Special Olymipcs down, he mearly thought he'd be a good candidate for their bowling league. If we start critizing every work President Obama says - it's going to be a l-o-n-g four years. He is, thank god, only human :) from Portland by Andrea

Comment: Leave the man alone and let him do his job as president he has done nothing wrong nor has said anything offensive, I have a niece and a nephew with downs syndrome they grew up around the special olympics, So when I heard my president Obama say what he did for some reason everyone made a big deal of it, I laughed I see such a nice funny man in obama and he should be able to laugh and be happy and not have to watch everything he says and does, Last time I checked he was an american citizen and the president of the united states, He is a very motivated and strong president and we need to be thankful for his good nature and service to this country, Obama is working hard and cleaning up everyone elses mess Obamas at the wheel follow him and trust me he will lead you to higher ground. Comment: Yes, I think he should have thought before speaking and besides which ...why are we paying for him to fly to California to be on Leno? from oob by Babs

Comment: Unfortunately, President Obama chose to compare his bowling scores to that of a Special Olympian. I believe him to be a compassionate man that would not intentionally hurt or offend an individual with special needs. He made a mistake. I'm sure Special Olympians everywhere have already accepted his apology in the kind, loving and gentle way they do everything. Why shouldn't we? Let's put this issue to be now. from Saco by Lori

Comment: The real question is, what would happen if Bush had said this? For all you people who say - "it’s a joke, show some tolerance" – you are the same people who would show absolutely no tolerance if someone like Bush said it – you ideologues should learn to think for yourselves. Even though I have a child in a wheelchair, I was not offended by this. I have the common sense to understand this was a joke, but it’s a joke that most descent people would never make (especially the president on national TV). Along with driving this economy into the ground with spending, this is just another example of how Obama has proven to me that he cannot make good choices. from Waterboro, Maine by Rich

Comment: While it is offensive, I find it more offensive that people really seem to exploit every petty thing. He apologized and people should just move on and stop looking for reasons to be offended. by T

Comment: He isn't perfect nor should we be looking for him to make a mistake all the time. from Buxton by Donna

Comment: Hmm, last I knew we all have the right to express ourselves, even the President. Poeple who make such a big deal over such a little thing need to learn to walk on eggshells because someday it could be them making an innocent faux pas. by Rob

Comment: I find everything about a lying, socialist offensive! by Rick

Comment: It may have been a joke in bad taste, but he is only human. Anyone would have laughed if one of their friends said it but god forbid that Obama say it. from Augusta by Joel

Comment: i don't know of people today, because when i was a child, people used to joke around and they knew that person was joking, now after 9-11, people take people for granted and is not a joking comment it is true. also today if someone said something to someone, they will get thier butt kicked. so the president did nothing wrong,. come on america cheer up ! from biddeford, maine by james

Comment: I did not find what he said offensive.I feel people are looking for him to say or do something wrong.remember the President is human, and humans mistake at times. However admitting you made a mistake is divine, which is what he did.So let's move on. from marco Island Florida by John
