Comment: Keep the goverment out of it. Let the private sector research it at there expence notthe tax payer from Sabattus me by irene

Comment: Of all of the Bush policies, this has been the largest failure, in terms of impacts to our society. Limiting potential break throughs in medicine, based on religious doctrine, is terrible. I guess I am now a heritic. from SP by S

Comment: Obama is not God. from Portland by sam

Comment: it is immoral by Denise

Comment: it's about time to get this country going again with science. from Norway/Maine by Dawn

Comment: Federal money should not be thrown at such a controversial special interest group, especially in a time of such economic distress. People who support embryonic research should be able to donate their own money into a private fund, rather than using the tax dollars of many people who object to the practice and now will have no say as to how their tax dollars will be used. from Brunswick, ME by Shannon

Comment: Yes, he has given millions of people HOPE which is what Bush took away from people. from Westbrook, Maine by Karen

Comment: The facts bare out that it is ADULT stem cells that have shown the most promise in research, not stem cells from fetal tissue. Comment: I believe adult stem cell research is ok, but taking a life for research is just wrong, and that's what embryonic stem cell research would do...killing babies is just wrong, I'm very disappointed in the Presidents decision. from Readfield, ME by Terry

Comment: Adult stem cells show promise, actual life saving results and don't end human life. Embryonic Stem cells have no positive results and end a human life. Trading one life for another is unacceptable! from Belmont/NH by Jean

Comment: People like a quadriplegic friend of mine in Michigan can now have hope they may benefit from stem cell research which was sidelined for nearly a decade.. from Cumberland, Maine by Sue

Comment: For those who view this as wasteful spending...open your eyes! This could save your life or a loved one's life some day. from Lisbon Falls, ME by Pete

Comment: Absolutely! To impede medical research in this day and age would be a sin. from Portland, ME by Peg

Comment: A very important point that is never reported is; Materials not used in research is trashed. These materials are living organisms. Isn't humanity helping research better than trashing? from Raymond, Maine by James

Comment: An Embryonic Stem cell is a living entity. Stem cell research has, and is, being carried on without the use of further lines of embryonic stem cells. It has been shown that they are not as scientifically successful as adult stem cells, which are being used with very promissing results. Bush never stopped stem cell reasearch. He just limited it to the lines already available, and to adult stem cells. Also, no one is explaining that it will take from ten to fifteen years to develope any results from the new embryonic stem cell research. Of course we all want advances in medical treatments. We all want lives to be saved. That is: saved, not distroyed by harvesting embreos for research that can be, and is being, done without them. Funny how it's an embyro when we want to think of it as disposable, but when someone wants "it", we call it a baby. Wake up and realize that good will not come from evil such as this. from Richmond, Maine by Jane

Comment: No, I do not agree with President Obama. It's basically making it "OK" to kill an innocent child, that never had a chance to live his or her life. It may help others, but I just dont think it's right. from South Paris, Maine by Amanda

Comment: I agree with Pres. Obama's decision to lift the ban.I have diabetes and it might not help me in my lifetime but might eliminate the problem in the future. i am guessing that MOST people voting against this decision DONT have diabetes or aren't paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Pres. Bush voted for the ban but sent our young too die in Iraq in a war that should never had been. What disturbs me is the idea of the "designer babies" that can have a choice of hair color, eye color etc.To me thats SCARY. IMHO from bridgton,Maine by Jim

Comment: I have never been a big Obama fan, but his stem cell decision really changed my mind about him. My father is 51, and he has been suffering with excruciating pain caused by chronic and debilitating Rheumatiod Arthritis(RA)for over 20 years now, with no remission. Since this disease has no cure, and a prognosis of persistent, increasing pain, and the gradual diminishing of one's ability to move to do normal activities of daily living, as well as preform even the simplist of tasks including opening a jar or buttoning a shirt. Furthermore, the RA medications that do exist do NOT cure this disease, they only slow the progression of the disease, and they only work on certain individuals, not to mention they are extremely dangerous as they technically kill the immune system to prevent it from attacking and killing cartilage and vital organs such as the heart, liver, brain, eyes, etc... which puts him at great risk of dying from something as common as the "common cold". Also, these medications are so expensive that many who suffer with this terrible disease cannot afford the Thousands of dollars the medications cost every month to purchase them. So do I think stem cell research is a good idea? You're darn right I do! I would give anything to see my father pain-free, even if it was for only one day. I hope that stem cell research finds a cure for RA so that my father can have his life back, so that he can feel well enough to pick up and hug his granddaughter. I want my Dad to be around long enough to see her graduate from high school, and longer. When I heard Obama's decision I was so happy I actually cried. To all of those who oppose this decision, please think of how much GOOD stem cell research can do for people. Imagine not being able to hold or play with your own child or grandchild. Please let us help our fellow suffering men and women, and let them help my Dad... Please. from Augusta, Maine by Amy

Comment: This decision will potentially help millions of people suffering from diseases that plague our world. Obama has great courage facing this controversial issue. from Portland/ Maine by Eve

Comment: To walk again. To live. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Separation of Church and State was resolved with Roe v. Wade. Thank you Mr. President for turning the clock forward. I pray that ignorance will fail and honesty for reality will prevail. It's about time we accepted the fact that the Sun does not revolve around our Earth. from New Gloucester by Rich

Comment: My husband has MS and there are many being told daily that they have some sort of desease, that stem cell research will hopefully benefit all of us at one point in our lives. from Lewiston, ME by K

Comment: This is immoral and unnecessary from Richmond, Me by David

Comment: yes i do because there is alot of imbilical cords being thrown away that can help the handicap. and maybe they will be able to work again. and not collect and jugde people. and many kids wont have to take care of there hadicaped parent while growing up like i did. and they can be kids. i think its crule to though them away. and not help people. no collect. so the working is burdend as much as they are now and crime will go down. stem sells is found not just in a petree dish. thats wisdom. from biddeford, ma by laurie
