How do you think the country will change under an Obama presidency?
Comment: Those who need the tax breaks the most (low income earners and all lower-middle income earners) will probably get them. Big oil never should of got them in the first place. The IRS should audit and collect from those guilty of tax evasion (before 1/20/09 because BUSH will most likely pardon them). It might help reduce the deficit. from Greene by Wilhelm Scream
Comment: We will see new tax reform to help those in the middle class and below. We'll see him make new friendships for the US across the world where we once considered nothing more than a schoolyard bully. He will change the fabric of who we are and what we stand for by simply listening. It was time for change and america said "Yes we can!" from Gorham by Shonn
Comment: It will no longer be the United States of America. This USA will become a socialist state. We will have high taxes to pay except for the low income earners. It is not right that he should take what I have earned to give to someone who did not earn it. Go out and work, pull yourself up. Go back to school and learn to make a living. It is not right that I have to support people who are to lazy to work. This election was stolen. As you can tell I am upset over this. from Windham
Comment: More Taxes, fewer jobs. Just like our democratic Maine government has done to us.... from Harrison, Maine
Comment: It might go good at first but then it's going to go all down hill worse then it is now he has no foreign policy experience what he wants might sound good now but wont work when it gets put into play. from China ME by Peter
Comment: Increased taxes. Less money in our pockets to put back into the economy. Longer recession. Socialism. Communism. People staying on unemployment and welfare as long as they can because B. Hussein Obama wants hard working "rich" Americans to pay for them. More illegal immigrants. Terrorist attacks. from Freeport by John
Comment: I think more jobs will become available and our education system will improve. But Barack there will be no College playoffs in Football. from Smithfield,Maine by Alex
Comment: This country has become the ussa and i think we all know what I mean. There will be higher taxes on everyone there will be a full on depression, our freedoms will erode and we will see tons of BIG BROTHER looking over our shoulders. But the worst thing is I bielive another terrorist attack is deffinite possibility. This indeed a dark day for this country from Biddeford by Steve

Comment: Can't be any worse ..with loss of jobs, retirement funds and cost just to live.Bill Clinton balanced budget hopefully Obama can at least start to turn us around from Biddeford
Comment: Besides bringing the economy under control, we will become a more just society (and a safer one): Bush's war in Iraq will be ended; our relations with the rest of the world will grow healthier; "big business" will not be favored over the public interest any longer; businesses around the country will grow and flourish; poverty will be brought under control; the rigid class structure will grow more permeable with access to higher education more available; healthcare (if not a single-payer system) will improve, and all will be covered. These are not dreamy expectations but ones that come with a just society. from Portland, Maine by Stan
Comment: Socialism meets uncle Sam but our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan now have the most to fear. Within two years it will be Vietnam all over again and the last few thousand troops left over there will suffer tremendous losses because Obama wants to set a drop dead pull out date. That scares me because I have family serving in Afghanistan. Obama and the democratically controlled congress will not support our troops. God bless our troops and God help our country. from Windham by Mr. Reality Check
Comment: i can only hope that we as a whole can do much better and see changes come to us that we are in need of.i only hope that bush cannot do anymore damage to us then he already has. from south paris by janet
Comment: I believe that President Obama will heal our nation and bring us together. I believe he is the leader that we need to make real change in Washington which is corrupt. He will be able to cross party lines and enable the House/Senate to act as ONE NON-PARTISAN Unit and actually put the needs of the middle class people priority!Pres Obama and VP Biden are the leaders we need NOW. from New Gloucester/ME by Sandy
Comment: I truly believe we are in for real trouble! from Lisbon Falls by Jannene

Comment: If he keeps his campaign promises the economy will suffer and more people will be unemployed. He doesn't seem to understand the direct link between Wall Street and Maine Street. Comment: I think our country is in for great decline under Obama's leadership. But, we have no-one to blame but ourselves we allowed him to win. I just pray for our servicemen, because it is clear he doesn't have their best interest in mind. I think our country doesn't not know enough about who Obama really is! The public wouldn't believe McCain and Palin when they warned us about the character of Obama and now we are about to find out for ourselves. I would say our only hope now is to pray for our nation and hope God hears our prayers! from Standish, Maine by Republican
Comment: I believe it will go to hell in a hand basket by Moebeck
Comment: Yep, we have a new president and the Dow drops! Great start. Whose celebrating? from Richmond, ME by Barbara
Comment: I think this country is going to take a major turn for the worse. We elected a president who spent the entire time telling us what the other candidate was doing wrong but, to this day we have no idea what he is going to do to help this country. I am very saddened so see our country is going to be run by a man with no experience and no common sense. from Bridgton by Sandy
Comment: I don't believe it will change much at all.Its hard to tell because we know nothing about the man. from Poland, Maine by Richard
Comment: I think it will be the 1930's all over again hi unemployment. The only difference will be the welfare system that we unfortunately have in this country( especially states like Maine) so people will not have the incentive to fix anything with all their welfare aid coming in extending the eventual depression even longer. Socialism didn't work in the soviet union and it will not work here.Nothing will fix this country until the PEOPLE start to take responsibility for their own welfare and stop defending on the government by voting in liberal politicians that believe more in hand outs then helping hands.Welcome all to the USSA. Hope you like what you got. from sanford,me by Ashamed of my state
Comment: Nowhere near as dramatically as in the paranoid delusions of some people. I expect our foreign relations and finances to be much more conservatively managed. Income taxes will go up (actually, previous temporary cuts will be allowed to expire), but not for the folks who will likely comment here. The "extra" revenue will likely be used first to stimulate the economy through projects to fix infrastructure and move us off Mideast oil. Some revenue will be used to shore up the safety net (unemployment, farm loans, etc.) in a down economy, but efforts will also quickly get underway to begin reducing the deficit. A deal withe the Iraqi government will get done, some troops will be rotated over to Afghanistan but even more will come home, though slowly. Iran will get offered a deal that includes some carrots, but also probably an even bigger stick that will have much broader and more committed international support. - - - - Seriously, those folks who are expecting everything to blow up are in for an ultimately pleasant disappointment. from Waldoboro, ME by Steve
Comment: I think Mr.Obama will change this America For the better. And Hopefully get our boys and gals home where they belong. And hopefully with a little help from all of us. Get us out of Debt.We need a change for the better. So "YES WE CAN!" Change has come to AMERICA. We need it badly. from Lewiston by Theresa
Comment: I think the stock market will take a hit as people take their gains before taxes increase, which in turn will affect many peoples retirement investments. Comment: I think that we will start to see a change... for the better. I believe it may take some time to 'repair the damage'. Just within the past few months, I have seen America become united as it once was... true stories that I have only heard about from a few decades and more ago. I am saddened by some that have the misconception and poor views for Our Country's future or our newly found President. However, for this day-I can honestly say I am PROUD to be American! from Lewiston, ME by Melissa

Comment: Obama is a bad man, he will take away freedoms. Our taxes will go up, and liberties will be taken away. It is a sad day in the USA. from Biddeford by Jesse
Comment: becomes a welfare nation of self centered cowards from South Portland, Maine by David
Comment: I feel as if we have made a huge mistake. I will keep an open mind however. With the democrats holding the White House and majorities in the House and Senate, there are no excuses. If significant changes are not made and things have not turned around within two years, the country will turn their backs on Obama's administration. For all the ignorant, uneducated Obama supporters, take a look at Socialism and Communism throughout the world. That concept has failed everywhere else. In the meantime, I am pulling all my IRA's, 401K's and other investments while I can still keep them and not be forced to turn them over to people that don't deserve the support. from Brunswick by Phil
Comment: I think it's about time the rich pay their taxes for what they earn seems we middle and lower class have carrying their load for last 8 yrs about time they carry their owm load for a change Obama is good for this country. from Standish by Ron
Comment: Obama frightens me. Backed by a Democratic Congress, we will "give away the farm" economically - just look at the state of Maine! He is a poere monger and his supporters are lemmings. More government control is socialism. It sickens me to think of Michelle, ungrateful , Obama in the White House. from Waterville, ME by Mary
Comment: We will become a more civilized society. The unfair "the wealth will trickle down" will be gone and programs aimed at the middle class will have an increased funding so that we can have a healthy america. Also, our foreign relations will improve and no terrorist attacks for us- the whole world was rejoicing at Obama's election. Social equality will arise, and finally the mistakes of the past 8 years made by the Bush administration can be fixed. from Scarborough by Chris
Comment: People can say what they want about President Bush, however the one thing that has been true with him,WE HAVE NOT BEEN ATTACKED AGAIN BY TERRORISTS HAVE WE? you people, who have been so focused on the economy have been eating out of the hands of the terrorists in and outside of this country. OBAMA has invited the terrorists in,he opened the door for them, but the people of this country have allowed it.our economy will mean very little to us when we are fighting for our own lives and those of our children, right here in the USA,quite possibly right her in Maine. the terrorist friends of the new pres.elect may keep him and his cronies safe but they will not be looking to keep the USA safe. all the money he will save the mid class, will be spent on fighting a war here on our own soil. the only way for this country to be saved now is if,the vice pres.elect,JOE BIDEN is at the helm. from standish, maine by Jennifer
Comment: I think it will change for the worst. I dont think Obama has the experience to be a president. This country is going to turn into a socailist country. from Westbrook by Justin
Comment: i think that its about time we get younger person for pres .. what harm can do ... from wales by troy
Comment: I do believe that those who voted for change will get change. It will NOT however be the change they envisioned. Mr. Obama is not the 'savior' of our country. I see him as the leader down a road of great despair. Not all change is good. Mr. Bush is NOT responsible for the shape of our country. He has very little power-IT IS THE CONGRESS that makes laws. Things were not so bad until the Democrats took control. That's when things headed the wrong direction. I don't see any real 'change' coming. by cathy
Comment: I am glad Obama won, we needed a change, we have gone down hill the last 8 years and McCain would have continued that. Give Obama a chance, he may surprise us all! from Scarborough by Molynnda
Comment: More liberal. Progressives don't know that their kind of progress is actually regression. Rome and Greece fell, they were progressives. from Auburn, Maine by Jeanne
Comment: The very moral fabric of out nation is at risk. Not because of his color, backgroupnd, inexperiance, or even his scary associations, but do his his extreme views on social issues and his niavety on global politics. from Oakland by Jim
Comment: I prefer to be optomistic, and give him a chance, but I have this gut feeling the he will make Cater look like he was a good President, I also feel we are heading for some of the worst times this country will ever have to endure and it will be completely his fault. The one good thing is that when all is said an done, it will show he has NO QUALIFICATIONS for the job. Now the liberal press(including Channel 13)will now have a person they adore and can do no wrong. from Freeport by Thomas
Comment: I think this country is being punished just like the jews were in the old testement. When we think it is okay to murder our unborn children. How do you think God will react. Obama will destroy this country. At least I know this is not my home and will one day not have to worry about any of this. Comment: I think the uncertainty is scary. I'm nervous for the safety of our children. I hope he surprises me and things get better. from Sanford by Rene
Comment: First, the world's perception of our country has improved immediately. Let's see if Obama can do for the schools, the healthcare industry and employment situation what Bush did for his corporate exec's with a bailout. It is time for Americans to recapture our status as a productive, and intelligent country. Please, let us have some jobs return to the U.S. from Phippsburg, ME by Kat

Comment: It was and will coninue to go down hill now that Obama is the future President. It will be more free hand outs to minorities and he will try and play Robin Hood and take from the wealthy, who work just as hard, and give it to the little crack whores who abuse the system. 50% of these charity cases should be shut down. from Scarborough by Greg
Comment: Much Higher Taxes - Better infrastructures - Weaker Military - Increased Chance we will have trouble abroad and at home - Over regulation - Family values losing more ground in the name of fair treatment for non-Christians - Public schools trying to indoctrinate our children with ideas that are void of Christian values. The Democratic Party that our parents knew will be lost forever - God Bless America - Please. from Mexico by Robert
Comment: hopefully raise everybody up. social programs created the largest middle class the earth ever saw. so called "distribution of wealth" was the most effective part. hopefully more people learn what socialist and communist mean. it seems there is barely a grasp on it by what i read here. we have been taking our money and giving it to people for decades. from the middle to to the top. and it hasn't worked. cutting regulations hasn't worked. cutting top tax rates did the opposite of what was promised. the next 4 years may be the turn around that saves this country from failure. from portland by joe
Comment: its interesting how the dems said not to bring race into the election. and if obama lost it was racism. ten min. after he won it was all about race from 98% black vote, historic, etc. so its safe to say it was racism that got him elected.bring on any color president thats qualified. as for me i'm a typical white guy clinging to my guns and religion (and now my wallet) by cliff

Comment: Interest rates and taxes will rise. Economic growth will be non-existent. This is the beginning of Socialism.... from Eliot, ME by Peter
Comment: I expect obama to raise the minimum wage, increase taxes, and increase regulations and ergo the cost of goods produced. While our economy is hurting, it means the cost to produce goods will increase and be passed onto the consumer whose buying power will be more restricted. So I expect jobs to move overseas at an accelerated pace, and the US economy to get worse and worse. Obama also talks a loot about darfur and getting us troops to go there, so I think that he is willing to put american lives at risk without any regard for american interest. He says Iraq was a mistake but we initially had an interest, how is darfur not a mistake in his mind? Luckily we have a congress, but I wonder separations just and unjust in his mind. Or if saying a war is not just is purely machiavellian-for his aspirations of power. Being a Machiavelion for electability doesn't take courage or honor, it is simply telling people what they want to hear. Now that the election is over he doesn't have to care about what he said to those who elected him if he has deeper machiavellion desires. I also don't like the shady characters obama is hanging out with. ayers, mcknight, and this rahm, Obama's chief of staff, sounds like an extremist who has threatened to kill specific individuals of his own party....maybe we should all become democrats before the obama admin decides to kill all his dissenters-like what Ayers planned. from wikipedia on rahm. "Emanuel was so angry at the president's enemies that he stood up at a celebratory dinner with colleagues from the campaign, grabbed a steak knife and began rattling off a list of betrayers, shouting 'Dead! ... Dead! ... Dead!' and plunging the knife into the table after every name."[6] His "take-no-prisoners attitude" earned him the nickname "Rahm-bo". from hotlanta by mike
