September 06, 2010 15:14 EDT
LEVANT, Maine (AP) -- Police say a small single-engine plane sustained substantial damage after getting caught up in a wind shear and crashing at a small airstrip in central Maine. The pilot and his passenger escaped without any major injuries.
FAA spokeswoman Alison Duquette said the pilot of the Cessna 140 apparently encountered a wind shear at about 11 a.m. Monday while practicing touch-and-go maneuvers at a privately owned grass airfield in Levant, about 10 miles from Bangor.
Maine State Trooper said the pilot, Ian Gillis of Glenburn, suffered minor injuries. The passenger, Douglas Grant of Petersburg, Va., appeared to be fine, but both were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center as a precaution.
According to FAA records, the plane was manufactured in 1948.
