The House voted 206-155 Wednesday to kill former House Speaker William O'Brien's bill to ban the expansion supported by Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan.
O'Brien, a Mont Vernon Republican, argued that expanding Medicaid is unaffordable and unnecessary. He said the government's funding promises can't be trusted.
Ban opponents said that New Hampshire's poor adults would benefit from getting health care, especially from a primary care doctor.
New Hampshire's current program covers low-income children, parents with children, pregnant women, elders and people with disabilities. The expansion adds anyone under age 65 who earns up to 138 percent of federal poverty guidelines, which is about $15,000 for a single adult.
