Maine Maritime Museum is filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of exhibits. The museum is kept at a constant temperature and humidity and almost feels tropical inside, to protect the exhibits. All of that was threatened, though, when wind gusts of up to 63 miles an hour tore huge sections of the copper roof off the museum.
Dave Garrison says the roof came down about the same time most people lost power in Bath right at 8 in Thursday morning when winds were at their highest.
Dave Garrison: "The wind got under the copper sheathing on the building. And it started coming off. It came off in one large sheet on one side of the building. And then on the other side of the building it just rolled up."
Employees who had just gotten to the museum couldn't believe what had happened, after all, metal roofs are built to last. It turned out, it wasn't just the high winds that brought the roof down. Roof inspectors found some rot in the plywood understructure.
So for a museum that has been through hurricanes and nor'easters without a scratch, it was those 60 mile an hour straight winds that brought the roof down. The Maine Maritime Museum is in the process of getting estimates for the repairs. Fortunately, the museum's insurance will cover most of the repair cost.
