The South Paris Fire Department tells us they got a call around 3 a.m. Thursday of a fully engulfed home on Durgin Road. Five family members inside managed to escape, but their home is a complete loss. And while the fire department battled the intense heat, they say they faced another challenge -- extreme cold.
Below zero temperatures made fighting the fire near impossible because the cold air turned the water from their hoses into ice.
Chief Brad Frost, South Paris Fire Dept: "Once you get the running water and you shut the nozzle off, you have to leave it running so it goes on the ground and instantly freezes. Anything you put on the building, if it's not hot, it will freeze up. So, you have to watch your step. And, you have to circulate your water so your pipes don't freeze."
The fire department tells us the home was a complete loss. The fire marshal is still investigating the cause.
