The poll also shows there's a good chance Governor LePage could be re-elected if he were in a race with a democrat and an independent, a three way split, scraping by with less than 40% of the vote.
The picture isn't as good for LePage if he were to end up in a two way contest with any of several other candidates. In that scenario, the governor trails by at least eight points.
A senior political adviser to Governor LePage disputes the finding of the poll because the poll is automated and Public Policy Polling is left-leaning.
