The Amtrak Downeaster began service to Freeport and Brunswick earlier this fall, and the train moves through several train crossings in town. Whenever the train passes by, a whistle on the train blows, and gates lower with accompanying bells and lights. People in town, especially people who live next to the crossings, say the noises are too loud, and come every day early in the morning.
There is support for the Town Council to create a Quiet Zone, and apply for a federal waiver that would lead to the noises going away. Such a waiver would require new safety features at the crossings.
The Town Council will meet next Tuesday night.
