Morris was granted the highest amount a plaintiff can get in this type of discrimination case in Maine. She says the money is nice - but what she really wants- is an apology from piercing pagoda, where this happened. It's a division of Zales jewelers that specializes in ear piercing and sells less-expensive jewelry.
Morris says she wanted to buy something but a female employee refused to help her because of her African-American and Native American race. She says a clerk at the Maine Mall swore at her and made derogatory comments, saying "I've had enough of your kind."
An attorney took Morris' case to the Maine Human Rights Commission, which agreed she was the victim of illegal discrimination.
The final settlement included a $100,000 judgment plus interest fees and costs, totaling over $123,000.
We called Zales corporate offices to find out if that employee is still with piercing pagoda or whether steps have been taken to make sure this doesn't happen in the future. The director of investor relations wouldn't answer those questions, but gave us this statement quote, “We firmly deny the allegations made by the claimant and it is our policy to not comment further on litigation.”
