Under the new rule change, "Physical restraint or seclusion may only be used when the behavior of a student presents an imminent risk of injury or harm to the student or others." But, what's not clear to teachers is what constitutes imminent risk.
Some administrators interpret this rule change that only teachers trained in restraint can subdue a violent student, and typically only special ed teachers and the principal would have such training. All teachers could do is remove every other student from the class.
The MEA is now working to create some special training sessions for its teachers, to make sure they're clear on not only the new restraining rules, but also on how to deal with any situation that might arise in the classroom.
The MEA wants educators to take a second look at these rule changes, but that would start with education commissioner Stephen Bowen, who could not be reached for comment.
