More than 900,000 Mainers live "The Way Life Should Be" in Maine, some, better than others. Families with a place they call home, food to eat, and a livable source of income.
Then there's the other third of the state's population, 425,000 men, women and children with family incomes classifying them as poor or near poor. Some are homeless. Many more are jobless or working jobs that don't pay near enough.
If you live or work in Portland, you likely pass right by some of Maine's poor everyday -- men and women who have chosen to swallow their pride, stand on a street corner, and ask people for money.
