A strike continues in Biddeford. Workers with Hostess walked off the job days ago in Biddeford and across the nation. Now, Hostess is blaming striking workers for the closure of three bakeries and the loss of hundreds of jobs.
The company announced the permanent closure of three bakeries in St. Louis, Cincinnati and Seattle. Employees walking the picket lines say as long as there is some sort of change, their message is being heard.
Hostess employees say the 8% cut to their wages just went into effect at the beginning of the month. They're anticipating cuts to their benefits. Months ago, Hostess pulled their pensions.
A hostess spokesperson says since the company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, everyone has had to make concessions. They company says other unions and senior management officials are dealing with the cuts, but the bakers union will not.
Hostess says if the employees don't get back to work, it will be forced to liquidate within days. The bakers union says that may be the best thing for these employees since a bankrupt Hostess can no longer provide job security.
