In Portland, a parade was held and speeches were given. In Augusta, Governor Paul LePage met with servicemen and women.
And in Biddeford, a special ceremony was held for an old plaque, which carries more than just names.
Made in 1964 at the Pepperell Mill in Biddeford, the plaque holds names of 300 Biddeford servicemen and women from World War II.
Biddeford is honoring the veterans on that plaque once again, because for a few years the plaque went missing while it was changing locations.
Mills Museum Board Member, Pete Lamontagne, found it in a basement, deteriorating, and decided to restore it. He tells News 13 he had no idea how to clean a 6-foot, 350-pound plaque but he found out it was as simple as dish detergent and a non-abrasive wax.
Lamontagne spent 40-hours cleaning the plaque, getting it ready for public display once again.
It gives a chance for people like Rene Gobeil to remember his time in war and be thankful he made it home.
11 names on the plaque belong to soldiers killed in action. Many of the names now belong to veterans who passed when their time came. But thanks to Lamontagne, Biddeford has another chance to remember them.
