She was stabbed 35 times. While the defense won't contest that Cantreras is responsible, they say the state hasn't proven why. His lawyers say Cantreras unknowingly got high on bath salts when he smoked pot laced with it the night of the murder. But the prosecution says the defense can't prove Cantreras smoked bath salts that night.
They say while he walked the neighborhood, he could see into Burton's window. She was sleeping in her recliner with her purse on a chair. Cantreras allegedly broke in through the screen and attacked. Investigators matched blood found at the scene to Contreras, but that wasn't their only lead. After the attack, Burton was able to call 911, and before she died she described her attacker to police.
The state played the 911 call during testimony and it was a very difficult moment in the court room for both families. The defense even offered sympathy to burton family. Testimony will now continue for the next few days, and each side will present its case to Judge Michaela Murphy,
This is a trial by judge, not jury, so the judge will ultimately decide Contreras' fate.
