With the snip of a red ribbon, the most vulnerable in that community were given hope. With $3 million raised almost entirely by area residents and businesses, the new shelter is now ready to serve.
For those who've experienced the struggle firsthand, like Govenor Paul LePage, they know a shelter like this one is about more than colorful new bedding and a hot meal. It’s the support people need to start over, and do better. The shelter will offer life skills training and help finding jobs. Important steps to stopping the cycle of homelessness.
Shelter officials tell us the work isn't quite over yet. They are still trying to raise money to put an elevator in the building. They say that's so they take advantage of the second floor and actually expand their services. They say so far they've raised half of the money need to complete that project.
