The Maine People's Alliance wants Lewiston Mayor Bob Macdonald to resign in light of comments he made in a BBC documentary about immigration.
The MPA has collected 1,000 signatures for a petition calling for Macdonald to resign. They plan to present it Thursday morning at a news conference.
In a BBC documentary, Macdonald said, "When you come here you embrace our culture and leave your culture at the door," referring to the Somalians who have immigrated to Lewiston over the past 10 years.
The mayor spoke to News 13 last week about his remarks, and defended them, saying "When anybody comes here from any country, they have to embrace our
culture. Now, do they have to give up their own culture at home? No."
Macdonald continued, "We all practice a unique culture that is an American
culture over 200 years that's been developed."
Representatives from the MPA are expected to attend Tuesday night's city council meeting in Lewiston where they will also ask Macdonald to resign.
