A pair of explosions at a backyard swimming pool in Otisfield injures three family members, explosions caused by some sort of chemical reaction of pool cleaning products. Tammy Thomas was using a broomstick to mix chlorine granules in water in this small plastic bucket, when the bucket exploded.
Tammy's jeans and shoes were both covered in chlorine. But this wasn't the first time she mixed those pool chemicals. There are several warnings on the chlorine. It can cause irreversible eye damage and even be fatal. The label says to wear goggles, a face shield or safety glasses. And it says that dirt, moisture, organic matter, and other chemicals may start a chemical reaction resulting in possible fire and explosion.
Tammy was taken by helicopter to the hospital and is in stable condition. No word yet on how she's doing. Tammy Thomas' mother and father also suffered chemical burns in the explosion. Her mother in law got chlorine in her eyes, and the family is worried because she has implants in her eyes which helped her see.
Right now families across Maine are closing their pools for the winter. Christman Pool Service is one of several companies in the area that will close your pool for you. But if you prefer to do it yourself, employees here say it is important to take the time to read the entire label, and do what the directions say. They also warn customers not to mix products, but if they do, make sure to wear a safety shield just in case.
