The Scarborough Board of Education has proposed a policy that would require students to pay up to $100 to be able to park their vehicles in the school parking lot. The idea is that the parking fee would help balance their budget. Over the past few years, Scarborough has had to cut positions and had other budget issues and to offset that they've implemented activity fees.
Right now it costs high schoolers $100 dollars to play a sport. The parking fee would be another way for the school system to make money, they see driving to school as a privilege. However, As you might imagine, students and parents dont see it the same way.
There are about 150 spots in the lot where students park, and about 150 more across the way, so if the fee does end up being $100, that would bring it about $30,000 if both lot filled up with students.
The school board is expected to take up the issue August 16th.
Over 250 students are expected to protest.
