People still cringe at the thought of that deadly massacre inside a movie theater in Colorado. How could someone do something like that? And then, just two days later, police stop Timothy Courtois, from Biddeford, on the highway. Police find an arsenal of guns and ammunition in his car, with an admission from Courtois that he had brought a gun inside a Saco movie theater. Courtois' brother told us he had tried to get police to intervene, but was told he hadn't broken any laws yet.
Police say Courtois lied on his application when he bought at least one of the guns. And Tom Franklin, with Maine citizens against handgun violence, says even if you fail a background check at a licensed gun dealer, it is still easy to get your hands on a gun.
In Maine, 200-300 people fail those tests and can immediately buy Uncle Henry's, open it up and buy any gun they like with no background check.
Franklin says crazy to have 15 guns in the trunk of your car, and believes Maine should have limits on the number of guns one person can own.
Maine gun dealer Chuck Cabaniss says all tougher gun laws would do is stop law-abiding people from having guns, not criminals. He says the argument more guns means more crime just doesn't fly. You're 25 times more likely to be a victim in Washington DC with some of the strictest gun control in the country that you are in the state of Maine where virtually anybody can strap on a loaded handgun and walk down the streets.
Law enforcement officers are the one group of people who would like to see stricter gun laws, but Maine is a liberal state when it comes to gun laws and protecting people's rights to bear arms.
