At 295 feet long and almost 150 feet tall the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is certainly a powerful sight to see in and of itself. But more than that it’s also been home to 78 coast guard academy cadets for the last week. They've been on board for the last week getting their first taste of life at sea.
The final leg of the cadet’s journey began Friday morning in Cape Elizabeth. Accompanied by the Portland Fire Department, the Eagle made its way past Portland Headlight to Portland Harbor. A stunning sight even on a grey day.
It was also a welcome sight for the families of the 78 cadets who'd just finished a week of training aboard the Eagle with the Coast Guard Academy, their first taste of life at sea.
Training referred to as swab summer, cadets learn the basics of seamanship and navigation. Just as cadets have been doing since the late 1940's. Learning the ropes from their older more experienced peers.
If you're a history buff or you are just fascinated by ships like these then you are in luck. The eagle will be docked here and free tours are available all weekend long.
Here’s schedule of when you can come down and take a look
Friday the 27th from 2 to 5 p.m.
Saturday the 28th from 1 to 7 p.m.
Sunday the 29th from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
