Nearly 2,000 students were in class this morning when they were evacuated because of a "campus emergency."
Around 8:42 a.m., a call came into the campus security office with multiple bomb threats.
"Campus security here at Southern Maine Community College received a call stating that there were three bombs on campus, here at the South Portland campus. They did not give locations. They disguised their voices and we were not able to trace the call. Security took that as a threat to the campus, they immediately started evacuating the campus," says Lt. Robb Couture with South Portland Police.
Bomb sniffing police dogs came in to go through each and every building at SMCC.
The dorms have been cleared and those students are allowed to return to their rooms.
The threat caused serious traffic concerns. The campus is right on the peninsula, creating back-ups after all the cars tried to leave.
As an added precaution, SMCC closed its other campuses as well.
State police is also investigating what happened.
