It's a fact that there are far fewer manufacturing jobs in Maine today than there were 30, 20 or even 10 years ago but it's also a fact that many high-paying manufacturing jobs are going unfilled in Maine right now, because not enough workers have the right skills.
People from Maine's manufacturing industry, along with top leaders from the LePage administration, met in Augusta Friday. They're using national manufacturing day to highlight the problem, and efforts to solve it. Right now, the LePage administration, the community college system, and manufacturers are working to promote skills training. For example, an Auburn precision metal company has jobs that can pay $70,000 per year going unfilled because too many people-- young people especially-- just don't realize it's a viable career. And that's part of the goal right now.
To get the word out that people willing to get specific training, such as a two-year associate's degree in precision metalcraft, will be in demand now and in the future.
