You’ll remember that investigators say a propane leak led to the explosion here on Bluff Road that killed Dale Fussell. Here are the big questions still remaining. What caused the leak? Who's responsible for maintaining the gas line, and most importantly, did Fussell's landlord ignore her when she told them she smelled gas in her apartment.
Pattie Silva, Fussell’s friend: “Everybody deserves an answer, her children and her grandchildren and her brother and everybody, they deserve an answer, why did this happen to her?”
That's the question Dale Fussell's friend Patti Silva says everyone in town is asking, “We lost somebody because of somebody's negligence. Somebody didn't do what they were supposed to do and dale paid the ultimate price for that.”
Silva worked with Fussell every Tuesday, volunteering at the Neighborhood cafe, cooking meals for people in need. And a few weeks ago, Silva says Fussell came into the church with a headache.
Silva: “I asked her, did your doctor change your medication? Sometimes it's the weather and she said no, there's a smell of gas in my apt and I think that's what's giving me the headache. So I asked her did you do anything about it and she said yeah I complained to the management a couple times but I haven't heard anything from them.”
And that fact is why Fussell's family hired attorney Terry Garmey.
Terry Garmey: “It is the hope of the family that there is some justice for them but we will find out how this happened and we will produce something that will protect other families from having to undergo this type of tragedy.”
So Garmey is looking into Fussell's landlords and Irving gas company.
Garmey: “There are reasons to believe that her unit heater may have been repaired or even replaced very shortly before this explosion.”
So did something go wrong there? Fussell's property management has no comment, but Garmey says they'll get answers for Fussell's family and friends, who are busy planning Fussell's memorial service Tuesday. A special Tuesday night "neighborhood cafe."
Fussell's memorial service starts Tuesday at 430 at UCC in Bath, they're preparing for as many as 400 people. People who are hoping that lawyer can get answers and justice for her and her family.
