The home at 29-31 Bluff Road exploded around 5:15 a.m. and could be heard miles away.
“I saw the orange flash, I mean it happened that quick. I could see the debris that was on fire dropping back down," said Donald Carman, who lives down the street from the explosion.
It was a violent explosion just after 5 a.m. that even first responders could hear from the station.
“They knew something was going on. Phone calls started immediately," said Bath Fire Chief Steve Hinds.
When they arrived, they found this duplex engulfed in flames.
“A fire like that the intensity is incredible. The units are brick and tightly packed in here. Flames and heat were intense.”
The blast and fire were so intense, a woman didn't make it out. Investigators have not released her name.
The man who lived in the other apartment, had left for work about a half hour before the blast. Investigators say when he found out, he was overcome with emotion and was taken to the hospital.
Three other people who live in neighboring buildings were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
“This is quite traumatic for everybody around, certainly the explosion was heard miles away," said Sgt. Ken Grimes with the State Fire Marshals Office.
The Fire Marshal’s office has to dig through the debris to figure out what caused the explosion. The homes in the neighborhood are heated with propane. Investigators are making propane the focus, but have not definitively determined what caused the explosion.
