There are definitely problems out there at local restaurants, like at the Wok Inn, which is the most recent restaurant to shut down and re-open because of health code violations. But don't think every restaurant in the city is run-down, the reason they've found more violations is because right now they're focusing on new establishments, and restaurants that receive complaints.
The Loft restaurant had to close for a few days in October because, according to the health inspector, they had a roach infestation. The restaurant’s owner Paul Maxwell says the word infestation was a poor choice of words but he “understands she was doing her job.” And part of that job is inspecting new restaurants. Maxwell took over as the restaurant's owner in mid-October, and it's now up to code. Since taking over, he says the city's restaurant inspections are on all their minds.
In regards to which restaurants the city targets, Maxwell says quote, “Ive talked to other owners, it's a balance it's something that needs to be done, but a lot of them think it's unfair. How do you target the restaurant, what restaurant do you go to next, what's the procedure?” The city is working on that. With only one inspector for Portland's 800 plus restaurants and food carts, they're trying to get another inspector on staff.
