Toothpaste, mouthwash, socks, everyday items most people take for granted but they're good as gold for troops in far off places. On Wednesday, the girls of the Social Action Club at McAuley High School sorted through several hundred pounds of supplies they've collected to send to troops in Afghanistan, all part of their special mission called Operation Leatherneck.
Lindsay Owen, president of Social Action Club: They chose to do this for us, so we should be doing something for them and we are.
Katie Profenno, McAuley Senior: Actions speak louder than words, really, and I think that its so important that we give back.
The girls say the operation is inspired by one of their own, school administrator Patti Richardson. Right now her son is on his way to Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan with the Marine Corps.
Patti Richardson: Its really re-assuring to have all of that support behind you, to know that he's in so many hearts so many minds, so many thoughts. So many people are praying for a safe return for him and his entire unit. It really is just amazing."
For him and his fellow soldiers, these aren't just basic necessities, they are treasured reminders of those waiting for them at home.
Richardson: It doesn't matter what's inside the box when they receive a package from home it shows them that they're not forgotten.
Profenno: Even though its little it makes a huge huge difference.
The girls of Operation Leatherneck tell us that the major work is done. But there's still one hurdle left and that's finding the money to ship all of this goodwill over to Afghanistan. They say they're still about $300 short of what they need and they're hoping in the next week they'll be able to come with the rest of that money.
If you'd like help get those supplies to the troops of Camp Leatherneck, you can mail donation to McCuley High School in Portland.
