The governor has also signed a proclamation honoring the sacrifice of those on duty there when the Japanese launched the surprise attack. Dozens of U.S. ships were damaged or destroyed in the attack. The day after, President Roosevelt signed a declaration of war against Japan. And a special ceremony was held in Paris.
A man who survived the Pearl Harbor attack, along with other service members took time to honor those who died on this day in 1941. Taps played during a ceremony at the Maine Veterans' Home in Paris. It's to mark the service and sacrifice of veterans who survived Pearl Harbor like Burt Davis, who watched the Japanese bomb battleship row from a nearby boat.
Friday was also a dedication for a piece of history. Part of the mast from the U.S.S. Arizona, the ship sank after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in '41 where more than a thousand people died on the ship, is now a 10 by 30 inch metal piece is on display at the Maine Veterans' Home.
A retired lieutenant commander says remembering the meaning of Pearl Harbor is important and simple. The part of the Arizona that will stay at the Maine Veterans' Home was acquired with the help of senator Olympia Snowe's office. It's a piece of history they're proud to put on display for years to come.
